Where we represent patients

The conferences, symposiums and roundtables where METUPUK has spoken for people living with metastatic breast cancer — from Swansea and Glasgow to Lisbon and Berlin.

Where we represent patients

METUPUK is volunteer-led and patient-led. Everyone named on this page is living with metastatic breast cancer, or has lived with it, and went to these rooms to make sure someone in them was speaking from experience rather than about it.

This is the record of that work: the conferences, symposiums and roundtables we have attended, presented at, and in one case run ourselves. Each entry links to what we wrote at the time.

2024

  • ESMO Breast Cancer, Berlin — May. Founder Jo Taylor's poster on #FightingMBCPlatitudes, made with Eva Schumacher of the German cancer magazine Mamma Mia, won first prize. Jo was unable to travel because of her health, so the poster went without her. The survey behind it · Our update
  • Greater Manchester Cancer Conference (#GMCC24) — May. Jo Taylor gave the keynote, on the same days as Berlin. Our update
  • The Economist: Pioneering person-centred breast cancer care — end of May. Madeleine Meynell attended. Her report
  • UK Interdisciplinary Breast Cancer Symposium, Birmingham — early in the year, hosted by Breast Cancer Now. Kirstin Spencer wrote up the lectures, including the review of the year on oestrogen therapy resistance. The symposium · What it meant for drug access

2023

  • NICE methodology roundtable — December. On how NICE decides, which is the process that decides which of us gets treated. Our report
  • MBC Manchester Conference — our own. We wanted a conference that produced calls to action rather than a yearly get-together, and it is where the patient advocacy programme began. About the conference

2020

  • ECPC Virtual Metastatic Breast Cancer Roundtable — October. Bex Lewis attended and contributed for the European Cancer Patient Coalition. Beforehand · Her report
  • ABC Global Alliance: Europe's Beating Cancer Plan — October. Jo Taylor attended and took notes from the recording. Our report
  • Breast Cancer in Young Women (#BCYonline) — October. Our report
  • ABC5, Lisbon — the Global Alliance — the biennial Advanced Breast Cancer conference, and Jo Taylor's first time there. Written up March 2020
  • UKIBCS patient advocacy day — January. Sessions on how to read and interpret clinical trials, which is harder than it should be. The slides

2019

  • National Cancer Research Institute Conference, Glasgow (#NCRI2019) — November. Three days. Our report
  • Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Conference, Swansea — October. Jo Taylor was invited by Ann Baker, who at the time was the only clinical nurse specialist for secondary breast cancer in the area. Our report

Events we flagged to members but have no report from — including the UK Breast Intergroup meetings and the SIS Breast Cancer Healthcare Congress — are in the conferences topic with everything above.

If you are a conference organiser and want a patient voice on a panel, we would rather be asked than talked about. Email metupuk@gmail.com.
